OnePlus 6/6T’s latest OxygenOS 10 Open Betas bring bug fixes and camera improvements

While some devices are just now getting an Android 9 Pie update, OnePlus is pushing out another Android 10-based beta update with its OxygenOS 10 skin or the OnePlus 6/6T. This update brings fixes to some minor bugs along with camera improvements. The update is on top of the October 2019 security patch level.

One of the more important bugs being fixed is a certain tendency of the phones to randomly freeze and reboot (such is sometimes the case with beta OS builds). Another important bug being addressed is an issue with fingerprint identification, along with a fix for animation lag when fingerprints are used to unlock the phones. If you prefer using the 5GHz channel on your WiFi router then you may experience an improved connection to it with this update.

Lawnchair 2 stable is now rolling out on the Play Store with tons of new features

Third-party launchers may not be as tightly integrated into the system as first-party launchers are, but they generally offer a lot more features than the stock launcher on any given device. Take Google’s Pixel Launcher, for example. It’s clean and beautifully designed, but there are only a handful of options to customize the launcher. In comparison, a third-party launcher like the popular Lawnchair app has dozens of features. You can stick with a more minimalist, Pixel Launcher-like experience or you can customize out the wazoo. The last stable update was version 1.2.1 back in July, and now the Lawnchair app has reached version 2 in the stable channel after months of beta releases.

The Honor 9X Makes Major Improvements Over the Honor 8X

When it comes to phone upgrades, we can usually expect the same types of changes in phones from the same series. You will usually see a slightly better camera, the next fastest chipset, new software, and maybe a slightly different design. However, when a phone makes significant changes to improve just about every aspect of the next release, then you will see true evolution of a phone and not just a standard upgrade.

In the case in the Honor 9X, Honor has truly evolved the X-series line to be something much different and significantly better. I have been reviewing the X-series since the Honor 5X and it has always been a solid budget line that provides smartphone basics at an extremely competitive price. Let’s see how the Honor 9X takes the brand in a more exciting direction.

If you’re thinking the Honor 9X looks much larger than the other phones from the X lineup, you’re not wrong. By moving the selfie camera to a motorized popup mechanism, Honor was able to fit a dynamic full-view display without any interruption of a notch. This means more of the front of the phone is dedicated to the display. The Honor 9X manages to fit a large 6.59″ display while the body of the phone isn’t much bigger than that of the Honor 8X.

While the Honor 8X is a great option for the budget phone scene, it feels like a very different phone. With the display noticeably smaller at 6.5″, the notch becomes quite an intrusive feature when compared to the new design of the Honor 9X.

Better Photos at 48MP

The Honor 9X saw a massive jump in photo quality when Honor decided to treat it with a 48MP triple camera. With the 48MP camera being the most exciting feature coming from flagship phones in 2019, this set the Honor 9X right up there with many of the top phones of the year. Along with the 48MP sensor, there is an 8MP Ultrawide lens and a 2MP depth sensor.

While the camera of the Honor 8X was respectable, it was clearly a member of the budget phone category. The 20MP sensor was paired with a 2MP depth sensor for the dual camera setup. The 48MP upgrade on the Honor 9X takes the camera from good to great and sets high expectations for future X-series phones.

A Better Design

While the designs of the two phones are similar in some ways, the 9X has improvement everywhere it counts. The 9X finally ditches the micro-USB charge port in place for a USB Type-C. They have chosen to still include a 3.5MM headphone jack at the bottom of the phone, much to the approval of just about everyone. The larger display is also a big improvement, and ditching the notch was a much needed step in the right direction. The 9X is a little heavier than the Honor 8X, but it’s larger size means it is able to fit a larger battery. While the 8X had a decent 3750mAh capacity, the 9X bumped the capacity all the way up to 4000mAh.

[Update: Watch GT2 launch date] Huawei Kirin A1, Huawei’s first dedicated chipset for wearables, will launch in India next month

Update 1 (11/30/19 @ 03:05 AM EST):  Huawei Watch GT 2 will be launched in India on December 5, 2019.

The uncertainty due to the Sino-US trade conflict has led to much confusion about GMS (Google Mobile Services) support on Huawei and Honor smartphones. Despite exciting announcements like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and the Honor 9X, the availability of these smartphones has been limited to only certain regions. However, the pace of innovation hasn’t dialed down even a bit and Huawei has been working on its first-part operating system called Harmony OS, which would be a backup option if official GMS support does not return to Huawei and Honor smartphones. Meanwhile, they are also vying to build their own ecosystem of accessories and smart wearables, and has developed the Kirin A1 SoC dedicated to the category of products.

The Kirin A1 chipset is not dedicated to a specific type of product and can be used to drive a wide array of wearables. The Huawei FreeBuds 3 and the Watch GT 2 are two of the products that already use the chipset and Huawei intends to launch more products like AR Glasses, over-the-year as well as neckband-style wireless headsets, and Bluetooth speakers. Huawei will be launching some products with the Kirin A1 chipset next month in India.

The key highlights of the Kirin A1 chipset include a dual-chip design and support for Bluetooth 5.1 and BLE 5.1 protocols. The latter helps the Kirin A1 switch back to the low-energy mode whenever possible, thereby resulting in power consumption as low as 10mA per MHz which, as per Huawei, is nearly one-third of similar wearable-centric chips from other manufacturers. For truly wireless earphones, the chipset supports isochronous Bluetooth connectivity which means that both of the earbuds can connect to the input source independently. The range of Bluetooth connections on devices using this chip is 150 meters (~500 ft / 165 yards).

Huawei’s Kirin A1 chip uses a single-core Arm Cortex M7 processor with a maximum frequency of 200MHz. The 4.3 x 4.4 mm die consists of a Bluetooth chip, an audio processing unit, a “low-power” application processor, and a power management unit. Huawei says the chipset is designed to deliver accurate readings and low-latency readings from multiple sensors and high-quality aural experience on audio accessories.

The first products with the Kirin A1 will be coming to India next month which is when we’ll be able to test these claims about power efficiency and low latency.

Huawei has sent out media invites for the launch of the Huawei Watch GT2 in India. The event is scheduled for December 5, 2019, and in the creative, Huawei is boasting about the Watch GT2’s two-week-long battery life. We’re not sure of the variants that will be launched in India, or the pricing. Internationally, the Watch GT2 starts at $199.

OnePlus Gallery 3.7.19 now lets you sort photos by when they were added

Each OEM has their own take on their photo saving and picture-backup experience. Some have a simple, old-fashioned gallery app that displays pictures saved on your device and not much more. Then, we have devices that ship only with Google Photos, Google’s own alternative which includes cloud saving and a number of AI features complementing the whole experience. The OnePlus Gallery app, far from being barebones, includes a number of features which is further going to be expanded in some markets at least.

Now, it will include yet another new feature: sorting photos by added/import date. This seems like a surprisingly minor feature, but previously, the app would only allow you to sort images by their capture/creation date: this meant that some images, particularly those downloaded online, could end up buried in your gallery since they were created much earlier than most of your other images in your gallery app. Allowing users to sort images by the date and time they were added in your gallery should keep much of this hassle at bay.

 

This update, which goes by the number 3.7.19, is now rolling out through the Google Play Store as an update to the current OnePlus Gallery app, so if your OnePlus device has the latest version of OxygenOS and OnePlus Gallery, you should be receiving it on your device very soon. If for some reason, it doesn’t appear on your device, then the latest version should come to your device whenever it receives a new OxygenOS update.

[Update: Face Tagging Rolling Out] Google Photos 4.32 tests Manual Face Tagging and account switching gesture

Update (11/29/19 @ 1:40 PM ET): Google Photos manual face tagging feature is rolling out now.

Earlier this year in July, Google Photos product lead, David Lieb, revealed a couple of upcoming features for the app. Among these was the ability to add manual face tags, but Lieb didn’t confirm when the feature would be released. We recently discovered strings of code hinting towards manual face tagging in a teardown of Google Photos v4.30. And with the latest update, the feature can now be manually triggered within the app.

Our Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman has successfully managed to activate manual face tagging in version 4.32 of Google Photos and we now have a clear look at the functionality it offers. As seen in the screenshots below, the feature will appear in the information section underneath photos in which the app has identified faces but failed to tag them automatically. Tapping on it will redirect you to a new edit window in which you’ll see all the faces that the app has identified.

To tag a new person, you just need to tap on their face in the ‘Available to add’ section and select the person from a list in the following window. In case the person isn’t already in your Google Photos library, you’ll also get the option to add them to your library. The app will then automatically tag other photos of the person and add them to a group. In case you make a mistake, the app will also give you the option to remove the tag.

Along with the manual face tagging feature, v4.32 of Google Photos also tests the new account switcher UI that was previously discovered by renowned reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. The feature works exactly like the account switcher UI found on Gmail or Google Drive and allows you to swipe down on your profile picture in the top right corner to switch accounts.

Tapping on your profile picture opens up a new pop-up menu in which you’ll be able to switch accounts, manage your Google Account, and check the status of the Google Photos backup. It’s worth noting that these features aren’t live in the latest update and we currently have no information on their release timeline.

Update: Face Tagging Rolling Out

A much-requested feature is finally rolling out to Google Photos. You can finally manually tag people’s faces in photos. Google is usually pretty good at doing this automatically, but you may prefer to do it yourself or clean up some of the photos that Google misses.

Unfortunately, though, it still relies on Google recognizing a face is in the photo for you to tag. You can add faces by tapping on the pencil icon in the “People” section under the photo. If there is no “People” section, Google has not detected faces. You can also use this feature to correct mistagged photos or remove unwanted tags.

Manual face tagging is appearing in Google Photos version 4.32.1, but be patient, as this seems to be a server-side update.

Customize the Razer Phone 2 with custom boot splash screens [Root]

The Razer Phone was the device responsible for kickstarting several current trends seen in modern smartphones these days, including the gaming smartphone trend as well as the high refresh rate trend. It is also, for a change, a surprisingly developer-friendly device, and the same can be said for its successor, the Razer Phone 2. The device, launched last year, is still a beast even by today’s standards, carrying a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a slick 120Hz LCD display. And the beautiful thing about Android modding is how you can change pretty much every aspect of your device inside and out, and with the Razer Phone 2, it is no different.

Google’s Messages app adds a Verified SMS feature that verifies texts from businesses

Google keeps testing new features for all of its Android apps. Before a new feature is rolled out to the app, its often tested internally by the company’s employees. While these internal tests are always inaccessible to the average user, at times we manage to enable them before public release. For instance, we recently discovered that the company was preparing to add bubble notifications and suggested stickers to Google Messages. Similarly, we’d previously unearthed a new Verified SMS feature in the app that was designed to check if the businesses messaging you had been verified or not. Now, Google has started rolling out a beta update for Google Messages that enables the Verified SMS feature for end users.

As reported by Android Police, the Verified SMS feature is now live in Google Messages beta v5.3.075. The feature is enabled by default and it only works when you receive an SMS from a verified business. The feature aims to prevent fake business accounts from spoofing users and makes use of authenticity codes to verify each SMS you receive. The verification method makes use of a unique hash created based on your phone number, the business, and the message’s content. Each unique hash is created right on your device and then sent to Google. The company then compares it against the one it received in parallel from the verified business.

In case the hashes match, the app will display information about the business, including its logo with a “verified” icon. However, if the codes don’t match, Messages will show a “Message could not be verified” prompt. In the event that you have a poor data connection, the app might bring up a “Verifying sender…” prompt until the process is done. And finally, if you don’t have a data connection, Messages will display a prompt saying “Waiting for connection to verify sender.” As of now, the Verified SMS feature only appears to be available in the US. Realme X2 Pro update brings camera and 90Hz refresh rate improvements

Earlier this month, Realme launched its first true flagship — the Realme X2 Pro — in India. The device packs in top-of-the-line specifications, including a Snapdragon 855+ chip, up to 12GB of RAM, 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage, and a high refresh rate 90Hz AMOLED display. Since its launch, Realme has rolled out an update for the device, featuring the Android security patch for November 2019, and it has also released a bootloader unlock tool and its kernel sources. Now, the company is rolling out yet another update for the Realme X2 Pro in India, with optimizations to the camera and 90Hz display.

The latest update (vRMX1931EX_11_A.07) for the Realme X2 Pro includes optimizations for the nightscape quality for the rear-facing camera, along with improvements to the quality of HDR photos. Realme has also added optimizations to the 90Hz display logic, but it isn’t clear what changes that would bring to the device. Realme is likely to spin off from OPPO to become an independent company

Back in May last year, Oppo formed Realme — a new online exclusive subsidiary of the brand — and launched the Realme 1. A couple of months down the line, the company’s vice president and head of its overseas business resigned and established Realme as a new technology brand. Over the last year, Realme has seen tremendous growth in several markets worldwide, including India, and has launched a slew of compelling smartphones across various price segments. The company recently launched the Realme X2 Pro, its first true flagship device, which is expected to further boost its popularity. Now, it seems like Realme is planning to take the OnePlus route and establish itself as an independent company.

According to a recent report from Digitimes, Realme Taiwan’s Chief Commercial Officer Chung Hsiang-wei has suggested that if the company continues to scale its business at the current rate then it will soon be independent of its parent company. Currently, the company shares its resources with Oppo, but it has already gone ahead and formed its own R&D team. The team is expected to build up its own ecosystem and product lines, separate from the ones offered by Oppo. Chung added that the company has already secured a place in the top-five brands for online sales in India and has ventured into more than 20 countries, including Indonesia, Spain, and Russia.

Even if Realme establishes itself as an independent brand, it won’t directly compete with its parent organization as they target different market segments, Chung added, further claiming that 60% of Oppo’s users are female and 60% of Realme’s users are male. On top of that, Oppo is slowly migrating towards the premium segment, while Realme is focusing more on technology and fashion-centric devices. The company is also planning to tap into the wearable and true wireless stereo headset markets, in a bid to distinguish itself from Oppo. The company also plans to launch a new lineup of affordable 5G phones in Taiwan by the second quarter of 2020. We’ve previously seen hints of the upcoming Realme X50 5G, but we aren’t sure if that device will make it to the Taiwanese market.

But getting a bargain on eCommerce websites could be a bit of a chore, especially with all the websites offering different deals on the same product. In a bid to simplify the process of hunting for a great deal, Amazon has now come up with the Amazon Assistant. The service is available within the Amazon Shopping app, as a standalone app, and even as a browser extension, and it allows you to quickly compare the price of any product on an eCommerce website with that of the same product on Amazon.

You can turn on the Amazon Assistant in the shopping app by heading to the app’s settings and tapping on the new Amazon Assistant option. The service will require you to enable the accessibility and draw-over apps permissions in order to show you the price comparisons in an overlay. Once you turn it on, the assistant will bring up a chat head with a link to the Amazon listing of the product you’re currently looking at. Tapping on it will redirect you to the Amazon listing which will show you a quick overview of its price, rating and FAQ section.

The browser extension works pretty much the same way, but it has an additional feature. Along with the price comparison, the Amazon Assistant extension will show you all your order and shipment updates, your universal registry and lists, and a link to your favorite products and deals. The standalone app works just like the assistant within the Amazon Shopping app and shows price comparisons when you’re browsing for products in your browser. If you already have the Amazon Shopping app on your phone, you can activate the Amazon Assistant as shown above or you can download the standalone app or Chrome extension from the links below.

Samsung reveals its One UI 2.0 (Android 10) update schedule for Galaxy smartphones

Just over a month ago, Samsung kicked off the One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy S10 series. Shortly thereafter, the program was extended to the Galaxy Note 10 lineup. Earlier this month, Samsung extended the One UI 2.0 beta to last year’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 series. Most recently, the company started rolling out a stable version of its latest software update to the Galaxy S10 series. And now, the company has officially revealed the update schedule for devices in India and the UK.

Samsung has reportedly started pushing the Android 10 update schedule in the Samsung Members app. Users can check the schedule for their region by opening the app and heading to the ‘Notices’ section. Twitter user @iamRaviLakra has shared a screenshot of the update schedule for the Indian region.

Firefox Preview 3.0 release brings along enhanced tracking protection and more changes

Google Chrome is the dominant browser across the globe, but it is imperative for the market to have worthy competitors. Mozilla’s Firefox is one such alternative, which although has just about 4% market share, is important for the development of the browser ecosystem. Back in July 2019, Mozilla had announced that Firefox for Android will enter its maintenance phase as the team had begun work on an entirely new browser. This came in the form of Firefox Preview, or Fenix as it was also known as. Firefox Preview was subsequently released in the form of a public preview, allowing interested users to try out the new browser. Firefox Preview is now receiving an update to v3.0, bringing along with itself tracking protection from ads, analytics, cryptomining and fingerprinting trackers; and more features.

The changelog for the Firefox Preview 3.0 update is as follows:

• Enhanced tracking protection in Firefox Preview protects you from ad, analytics, cryptomining, and fingerprinting trackers.

[Update: Stable update rolling out] Samsung announces Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy S10

Earlier this month, Samsung announced the One UI 2.0 beta program for Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e users in its home country of South Korea. Following that, the company announced the One UI 2/Android 10 beta within the Samsung Members app. However, it didn’t share when the beta would go live. While we’ve previously seen One UI 2.0 in the wild, the company has now officially announced the beginning of the One UI beta program.

The company announced the beta program in a recent Samsung Newsroom post, highlighting some of the new features and improvements included in the update. As per the post, One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 will include a couple of subtle UI changes to further streamline the design of the software. For instance, the caller notification and volume bar have been decreased in size so that they aren’t as intrusive as before. Additionally, Samsung has now extended the Dark mode to the home screen, ensuring users don’t have any eye fatigue while using their devices at night. Dark Mode can adjust the brightness of images, texts, and colors on the display, and also reduce battery consumption.

On top of that, there are some minor changes in the Smart Lock screen which now automatically adjusts the color of the text on the lock screen. There are some new tools for digital wellness, including a new Focus mode which will help you pause apps temporarily to minimize distractions. The Device care menu has also received some new features to help you manage your digital wellbeing, along with tools to give you more control over what’s on your device.

If you’re a Samsung S10 series user, you can go ahead and participate in the One UI beta program right away. Do note that participation in the program requires a Samsung account, which you can create by heading over to this website. It’s also worth noting that the program is only available for certain devices in select regions, so there’s a chance you may not receive the beta update on your phone even if you participate in the program.

It remains to be seen which other regions begin receiving their updates. The update also appears to be restricted to participants in the Beta program.

LineageOS 16 arrives officially for the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2, ZenFone 3, Yandex Phone, Galaxy S3 Neo, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Moto G7

Over the last couple of months, several devices have received official LineageOS 16 builds. These builds not only give older devices a new lease on life but also give users the chance to experience Android 9 Pie on their devices. Thanks to this, users with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Moto X (2014), and LG G3 can now enjoy all the new features Google introduced in Android Pie. Google Pay (Tez) for India prepares to add gold gifting option

Google Pay is Google’s unified payment platform, but the company also has an app with the same name but different functionality for users in India. This India-only Google Pay is a rebrand of the erstwhile Google Tez, and the app has gone on to add more functionalities after the rebranding. A Material Theme redesign for the app is in the works, and now Google is planning to add gold gifting options to the payment app.

Google Pay (Tez) for India introduced an option to purchase gold in April 2019. Gold occupies a special place in Indian culture, and the same is reflected in the fact that India is the second-largest consumer of gold in the world. Google had partnered with MMTC-PAMP India to allow users to buy 99.99% 24 karat gold from within the Google Pay (Tez) app. Users can purchase gold for any value, big or small, and the same is digitally stored in a Gold Accumulation Plan (GAP) by MMTC-PAMP, and physically stored in secure vaults on behalf of the user. These purchases are claimed to be 100% insured.

Gold purchased through the Google Pay account appears digitally in the Gold Vault within the app, which is essentially a visual representation of the GAP account balance. Gold that has been purchased can be sold from within Google Pay at any time at prices which are claimed to be refreshed every few minutes. You can also have your gold physically delivered to you, though this feature is available at a few locations only.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

As usual, this feature is not yet live within the latest version of the app from the Google Play Store. We expect Google to formally announce the feature when it is ready for rollout. While gifting gold will be made significantly easier with this option, keep in mind that gifting gold does have tax implications in India.
