Nextbit’s Robin Has New Release Date, February 16

Last year, Nextbit, a start-up from some industry veterans, introduced its soon-to-be-released phone – the Robin. The eye-catching Robin quickly nabbed almost 3 times the $500,000 Kickstarter pledge goal. For XDA readers, the device appears to tick a few boxes that are important to our community.

While the specs are pretty standard fare (1080p, SD808, 3GB, 32GB Storage, Fingerprint Reader, and a 13MP rear camera,) they are quite acceptable. The real standout features are a custom “cloud-based” version of Android, and the fact that Nextbit is OK with users wiping the device and running whatever ROM they may prefer. Taken right from the Nextbit website:

Robin comes with an unlocked SIM, so you can choose the right carrier for you. And because we think what you run should be up to you too, we’ve made it as easy as possible for you to customize Robin. Its unlocked bootloader and open source drivers make it easy to load CyanogenMod or any other ROM you want and Robin will still be under warranty.

In a world of locked down bootloaders and voided warranties, this is a particularly friendly and enticing policy.

Unfortunately, Nextbit has just announced a slight delay for the Robin. Continuing the trend of their open communication on Kickstarter; The GSM version Robin will now be shipping the week of February 16th.

Originally the Robin was promised for a January 2016 delivery, so we’re not looking at a huge delay here. Frankly, things like this are almost par for the
kickstarter course. Some last minute firmware updates and a late component are reportedly the cause of the slight delay.

Nextbit still doesn’t have a date for backers of the CDMA variant of the Robin.

Robin also posted some prototype camera samples along with the Kickstarter update if you’re interested in seeing what the Robin can do when it does eventually ship.
