Nova Launcher 5.5 Beta Brings Adaptive Icons to Android 5.0+ Phones

Nova Launcher is the go-to launcher for a lot of us. Not only does it bring the latest launcher features from the latest Android releases, but also does its best to backport those features over to previous Android releases. You can customize the look of your Android 4.1+ phone, and if you have Lollipop and up you can enjoy all the latest features, like app shortcuts (included in Android 7.1 Nougat phones). Now, with the latest beta version, you can also enjoy one of Android 8.0 Oreo’s big features: adaptive icons.

A new update has been pushed to the Nova Launcher’s beta channel. The 5.5 update, aside from bringing bug fixes, includes full adaptive icon support. The feature, just like App Shortcuts, was backported to work all the way back to Android 5.0 Lollipop. You can also customize the shape of the icons: just like with the Pixel Launcher in Android Oreo, you have round, squircles, rounded squares, squares, and teardrops. And you can also scale and reshape legacy or existing icons to match the adaptive icon shape.

As it’s a beta, it’s obviously not finished, as not all adaptive icons are currently backported. For example, the Google Dialer and Google Contacts app, which have adaptive icons in Oreo, are not backported. This is because apps with drawable aliases for their icons are not currently backported. This is an obvious limitation that should be polished before the final release. Also, apps using vector gradients in their icons (Plaid) are not working in Marshmallow and lower. If you’d like the uniform look for all apps, though, you can use the adaptive wrapper for existing icons, as it’ll somewhat remedy Android’s existing icon mess.

If you want to test out Adaptive Icons on your device, the Nova update is now up on Google Play. However, you’ll need to opt into the beta in order to download it. You can also download the APK through TeslaCoil’s website.
